When does marble need polishing?

Natural marble loses its shine over time: scratches from sand and foot traffic, dull patches from lemon, vinegar and chlorine cleaners, and wear around the sink and on stair treads. Grinding and polishing remove a very thin layer of the surface and bring the shine back. It suits most Egyptian marble such as Galala, Triesta and Silvia, imported marble, and granite.

How the work is done

We start by looking at the stone and how deep the scratches and stains go. Deep scratches are ground out first with coarse then finer abrasives; then the surface is polished until the shine comes back, and finished with a sealer that helps protect it from stains. The time depends on the area and the condition of the stone, and we tell you before we start.

Marble, granite and quartz

Marble polishes easily because it is a softer stone, which is also why it dulls sooner. Granite is harder, keeps its shine longer and needs different tools. Quartz does not polish like natural stone, and marks on it are treated differently, so send us a photo first.

Shiny or matte?

Polishing does not always mean a mirror shine. Floors can be finished with a soft sheen or matte depending on the place: matte is better for stairs and entrances because it is less slippery, and a high polish shows the veins in living rooms.

After polishing: keeping the shine

Clean with water and a neutral cleaner, keep lemon, vinegar and chlorine away from the stone, and put a mat at the entrance to cut down on sand. There is more in our cleaning and care guide.
