Marble cleaning myths from Egyptian homes: starch, vinegar, bleach and wire wool
Most damage to marble in Egyptian homes comes from inherited advice, not neglect: starch, vinegar, bleach, wire wool. Here is what actually happens to marble, granite and quartz, and what to do instead.
“Starch cleans and polishes marble”
A tip passed around many kitchens: sprinkle starch on the marble and rub until it shines. Starch is just an absorbent. Its one real use is soaking up a fresh oil or ghee spill before it sinks into the pores. It has nothing to do with shine: what you see after rubbing is a film of powder filling the tiny pores, and it goes with the first wash, leaving white residue in the joints and along the edges.
The right way: sprinkle starch on a fresh oil spot, leave it a few hours, sweep it up and wipe with warm water and a few drops of washing-up liquid. An old stain needs a poultice to draw it out of the stone; a dull acid mark needs re-polishing.
“Vinegar and lemon bring the shine back”
The most damaging myth. Marble is a calcium-carbonate stone, and any acid reacts with it at once: vinegar, lemon juice, tomatoes, fizzy drinks. The result is not a stain to wash off but an etch in the surface, a dull, slightly rough patch that shows when light falls across it. The 'lemon and salt' trick is worse: acid plus an abrasive that scratches the polish.
A sealer does not stop this etching (see the sealer section below). Granite is far less reactive, though repeated vinegar strips its sealer; quartz is not etched by it, and there is no reason to use it. If acid lands on marble, flush with plenty of water and dry. Light etching may fade with marble polishing powder; deeper etching needs re-polishing.
“Bleach and antiseptics are the safest way to disinfect”
Chlorine bleach is alkaline and oxidising. On marble it dulls the polish and can lighten some coloured stones; on granite it eats the sealer; on quartz it can yellow the binding resin, so quartz makers warn against it in their care guides. Worse, bleach mixed with an acidic cleaner such as limescale remover or vinegar releases a toxic gas.
Household antiseptics (Dettol, for example) are disinfectants, not stone cleaners; the oily kinds, used neat, leave a greasy film that collects dust and hides the shine. For daily cleaning, warm water with a few drops of neutral washing-up liquid removes most germs. To disinfect after raw meat, rubbing alcohol diluted with water is generally accepted on sealed stone and quartz: wipe, let it dry, then rinse.
“Wire wool and strong cleaners will shift any stain”
Wire wool shifts the stain, and the polish with it. Marble is soft; steel wool leaves fine scratches that build into a dull patch, and stray fibres in the joints rust into brown dots. Abrasive scouring powders do the same, more slowly, even on granite and quartz.
Strong cleaners, too. Alkaline degreasers, ammonia glass cleaners, caustic soda and oven cleaners dull marble and granite and strip the sealer; solvents such as acetone and paint stripper attack the resin in quartz.
Instead: a soft sponge or microfibre cloth, warm water to soften dried food, and a plastic scraper or old card to lift anything stuck on. A mark that will not come out this way is probably inside the stone: use a poultice, not harder scrubbing.
“Oil gives marble a like-new shine”
Wiping marble with oil or furniture polish gives an instant shine, but a false one. Oil does not sit on the surface; it soaks into the pores and darkens the stone, then oxidises and drifts towards yellow, especially on pale marble. It attracts dust, so the surface becomes a sticky layer harder to clean than before. Furniture polishes add silicone and wax that build up the same way.
Real shine on marble is not a layer on top. It comes from grinding the surface with progressively finer pads until it reflects light; that is re-polishing. If your marble has gone dull: polishing powder for small areas, or a full re-polish for widely dulled floors and worktops. Keep the oil for cooking.
“Water never hurt a stone”
Clean water does no harm; water left standing does. The water in many homes is hard, and every drop that dries on marble leaves white limescale that builds up around the tap and along the sink edge, far harder to remove than to prevent. Standing water seeps through a worn sealer and shows as a dark patch; a washing-up liquid bottle or a forgotten wet cloth leaves a shadow that takes days to dry.
Dry around the sink and tap after use, do not leave wet cloths or bottles on the surface, and use a squeegee on marble shower walls. Never remove limescale from marble with acid: use a neutral cleaner, a soft pad and patience, and if it has built up thickly, re-polishing restores the surface.
“Quartz can take hot pans”
Engineered quartz is quartz grains bound with resin, and resin does not like heat. A pan lifted off the hob and set straight on the surface can leave a yellow or white ring that will not come out, and the surface can crack from thermal shock, especially near the hob and around the sink cut-out. Because quartz cannot be ground and re-polished like marble, the mark is usually permanent.
Granite handles heat well, and marble copes with normal kitchen heat, though sudden thermal shock is a risk for any natural stone. So a trivet is a sensible habit for all three, especially beside the hob where pans come off quickly. The same goes for hot coffee machines, irons and air fryers whose base warms up.
“Bathroom limescale cleaner is fine on bathroom marble”
Most strong bathroom cleaners work with acid, because acid dissolves limescale off ceramic tiles. But marble is itself a lime-based stone, like the scale, so the cleaner that cleans the tiles dissolves the marble's surface. The tell-tale sign is dull streaks where cleaner ran down a shower wall, or a matt area around a tap. Toilet cleaners mark at once.
Mind the small things on a marble vanity too: some toothpastes are abrasive, and mouthwash, perfume and deodorant contain acids, oils or dyes and leave rings under their bottles, so use a small tray.
To clean bathroom marble: a pH-neutral cleaner or washing-up liquid, water, and drying. Read the label when buying: look for 'pH-neutral' or 'safe for marble', and avoid anything that mentions removing limescale.
“Seal it once and forget it, and granite never stains”
Two myths, one cause. A natural-stone sealer is an impregnator: it soaks into the pores to slow absorption, forms no skin, does not stop acid etching, and wears away with every wash and rub. There is no sealer for life. A kitchen worktop needs re-sealing about yearly, floors depending on traffic, dense stones less often.
And granite does stain, just more slowly. Pale granites are more porous; an oil ring under a bottle or rust from a tin shows clearly.
Test it: drop water on it and wait a few minutes; if the stone darkens underneath, it needs sealing. For an oil stain on granite: a paste of starch or bicarbonate of soda and a little water, covered with cling film, left overnight, then wiped away.
A safe weekly routine, and when re-polishing is the answer
You need few products, just steady habits. Daily: wipe any spill at once, especially anything acidic or oily, and dry the spot. Weekly: warm water, a few drops of neutral washing-up liquid and a soft cloth on every surface, then rinse and dry. Monthly: the water-drop test on the worktop and the vanity. About yearly: re-seal kitchen and bathroom surfaces.
All of that keeps the shine you have; it cannot bring back shine you have lost. Re-polishing is the answer when you see:
- Dull acid marks you can feel with a nail
- Matt walking paths on a floor
- Cross scratches from wire wool or dragged furniture
- Thick limescale a neutral cleaner will not shift
- Old stains a poultice did not lift
- Tiles with lips or uneven edges
Questions people ask
Does vinegar damage marble?
Yes, immediately. Vinegar is an acid and marble is calcium carbonate; the reaction leaves a dull, rough patch called an etch that washing will not remove. Flush with water at once if it spills, and clean with a neutral soap.
Can I clean marble with starch?
Starch only absorbs a fresh oil spot: sprinkle it on, leave it for a few hours and sweep it up. It does not clean or polish the surface, and the shine after rubbing is a film of powder that goes with the first wash.
How do I know if my marble or granite needs sealing?
The water-drop test: put a few drops of water on the clean surface and wait a few minutes. If the stone darkens underneath or absorbs them, the sealer has worn and the surface needs re-sealing.
Can I remove a dull lemon mark at home?
If it is very light, a dedicated marble polishing powder rubbed in circles with a cloth may fade it. If you can feel it with a fingernail or see it clearly under light, it needs re-polishing, which we do in Alexandria.
Do I clean quartz the same way as marble?
Almost: water, neutral soap and a soft cloth. Quartz needs no sealer and does not etch from lemon like marble, but keep bleach, solvents, scouring powders and hot pans away from it, because they damage the resin.
